No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
